The Seaflower Biosphere Reserve protects the second longest barrier reef in the Caribbean, measuring 32 kilometers in length. Covering 232,300 hectares, the Biosphere Reserve contains 77% of Colombia’s coral reefs. Climate change, overfishing, pollution, and unsustainable tourism are affecting the health of coral reefs. The Biosphere Reserve is a biodiversity reserve: it has 59 species of coral, 653 species of fish, 35 species of seabirds, and is an important migratory route for sea turtles and whale sharks. Coral reefs provide a livelihood and source of income for 70,000 people in the archipelago.
